ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The Northern State Medical University (NSMU) is the only institution offering higher education in medicine in the European North of Russia: the NSMU is the northernmost Medical University in Russia. The university got agreements with 6 governors of North- Western Russia. Not only for Arkhangelsk Region, but also for other areas of North-Western Russia (Vologda, Murmansk and Nenets regions; Komi and Karelia republics) the NSMU is a remarkable university center, which has nowadays approximately 9500 students – with PG students altogether 11000. The staff consists of 980 researches, teachers, academicians and professors. There are 18 faculties at the university.
The history of the university starts more than 75 years ago: the Arkhangelsk Medical Institute was founded in 1932. In 1994 the name was altered to Medical Academy, until in year 2000 it was reorganized as university.
The NSMU has experience already for many years in cooperation with foreign partners. The university has partnership agreements, and regularly takes part in international conferences.
The other international and multicultural element in the everyday life of the university is you, growing amount of international students. One of the most significant cities of Northern Russia hosts every year hundreds of students, coming from different parts ofthe world.
In year 2000 in the NSMU was opened faculty for foreign students, but already in 1991/1992 the university received its first foreign students from India, Pakistan and Syria. Students represent different countries all over the world: India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaidzhan, Turkey, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Angola, Cameroon, Zambia, Nigeria and Peru.
This guide is created to help you in orientating to the studies at the Northern State Medical University and living in Arkhangelsk. International Faculty of General Practitioners

Later on it’s possible to continue at other faculties, according to student’s own plans, study success, and level
of knowledge. The Faculty takes care of important official matters, like visa formalities, registration, study
plans, and helps with practicalities.

The education the NSMU offers is equivalent by international standards, so the Diplomas of the Northern State
Medical University are recognized all over the world. The University is recognized by WHO (World Health
Organization), ECFMG (USA), Medical Council of India (as per MCI Rules). NSMU is member of AMSE
(Association of Medical Schools of Europe). After passing degree from NSMU students are eligible for USMLE
(USA) or PLUB (I-JK) Exams. All our graduates apply their knowledge and skills acquired at the University in the
field of healthcare. All the NSMU graduates pass different certification exams when applying for jobs at clinical
esta blishments of any country of the world.
During the first year foreign students start also practical lessons in medicine. Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Anatomy, Latin and also Sports are included to the study plan. In autumn term 2002 the first international
group started their studies in English.
Student Of the International Faculty get the education in general medicine. In their last year they choose their
specialization, which can be in the field of surgery, pediatrics, or other specializations.

The period of studies at the International Faculty of General Practitioners is 5.8 years. On
graduation students get the qualification of “General Practitioner”. It is necessary to
study 41 subjects, to take 32 examinations and 34 tests. To become a specialist, one has to
go through the initial one-year specialization in internship or 2-year advanced training at
the Faculty of Postgraduate Education at the NSMU. After that it’s possible to work in the
professional line they choose: as surgeons, therapists, obstetrician-gynecologists,
pathoanatomists, neuropathologists, psychiatrics, otorhinolaryngologists, or to become a
manager in the public health system.

Traditionally Russian teaching system in medicine has been highly
estimated and to this reputation has affected the strong connection of the theory and
practice. Students got practical experience during their study years in many of the city
hospitals and policlinics, where the student training is arranged. University buildings
and clinics are provided with up-to-date equipment: computer tomographs, films,
angiographs, laser and ultrasonic units, endoscopy equipment, equipment for radiological
diagnostics and hyberbasic oxygenation. There are genetic, immune, biochemical and
clinical laboratories. These laboratories and equipment help to train specialists of
different professional lines to meet the needs of the health care systems. Since 1993
cardiac surgeries have been conducted using the apparatus of artificial blood circulation.
The foreign students who have had an opportunity to compare the level of
teaching, conditions of training and housing at the NSMU are on a high level compared to
other Russian institutions of higher education. Also the low level of criminality attracts
students to choose northern city to their study place. Foreign students will meet friendly.

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES

The university has exchange programs for students with the universities and institutes of
higher education in other European countries and in Northern America:

In general, for students the exchange programs come actual when they are at their 4th — 6th
course. And, on the other hand, the NSMU receives exchange students from partnership
universities. Exchange period can vary from few weeks to whole semester. From its side,
the NSMU keeps up the contacts especially with other institutions in Barents Sea region,
which traditionally has been important area for Arkhangelsk region.

orthern State Medical University was founded in 1932 as Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute. Since
1994 it was Arkhangelsk State Medical Academy (ASMA) and from 2000 – Northern State Medical
University. Thc university trains specialists according to 6 secondary educational programs, 18 higher
(undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate) professional educational programs, 59 internship programs.
Professional retraining and post graduate education are carried out in 72 specialties. Total number offaculties – IO, departments – 46. 

Nowadays 519 lecturers, among them I Academician RAS, I Corresponding Member RAS, 88 Doctors of Sciences, 276 Candidates of Sciences, 50 persons with Professor Degree, 147 – Associated professors, 60 persons with Honorary Degrees of the Russian Federation, 32 – Experts of Public Health work at
the university.

Training of academic and teaching staff is carried out via post-graduate and post-doctoral programs and Ph.D. thesis preparation. Post-graduate training includes 35 professions and 6 courses, post-
doctoral training -2. Two Dissertation Committees work at the university.
Scientific research is held in 13 guidelines in the frames of 7 sciences. Primary focus is on:
• Human Ecology, Mental Ecology, Mental Medicine
• Securityin Emergency Situations
• Arctic and Marine Medicine
• System Monitoring of Public Health
• Health Care ofcitizens of European North.
International cooperation is one of the key areas of the university development. In recent years 24
international projects were implemented in NSMU together with partners from B??R (19 – Norway). Over 10
years more than 40 international projects mostly in different areas of Arctic Medicine have been carried out.
In the frames of bilateral cooperation NSMU has 19 existing agreements with scientific and educational
structures of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, India, Denmark, Canada and Germany. Since 2004 NSMU is a
member of University of Arctic. Since 2001, every year exchange of student groups with one of the oldest
medical schools of the world – Medical College of Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland) takes place. In the
frames of FIRST Lapland programs students and lecturers have an opportunity for training and internship at
the universities of Finland. As a part of cooperation with UiT – the Arctic University of Norway (Troms ),
students from NSMU undertake research and clinical practice and internship. Besides, since 2009-2010
academic year students’ training at UiT – the Arctic University of Norway up to 1 semester has been
introduced. Over recent years more than 100 of our students worked and trained in Troms , 32 of them
continue scientific studies after graduation from Medical University in the frames of joint projects. 45
graduates from NSMU have defended PhD thesis in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Poland, Netherland,
Taiwan and Australia. The largest international project of the last decade is a creation of Arkhangelsk
International School of Public Health. The project was implemented together with UiT – the Arctic University
of Norway and several other universities of the Northern Europe with support from the Program of Healthcare
of the Barents Region (Ministry of Healthcare of Norway). Today, Arkhangelsk International School of Public
Health trains specialists in a wide range of basic professions to scientific and professional activity in the field of
public health. By now, 43 graduates have earned master’s degree and got Diplomas of UiT – the Arctic
University of Norway in Public Health.

The most important field of international cooperation in the NSMU is development of medical
educational export. Today more than 500 foreign people from 20 countries study at the university. From 1999
ASMA, and later NSMU (from 2007) has been included in the Database of the world recognized medical
schools maintained by the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Database of medical
universities ‘Avicenna” (Denmark). Besides, the university is recognized by Medical Councils of
India and Thailand (The official recognition of the Medical Council of Thailand is valid from 2014 to 2019). It
allows graduates – foreign citizens – freely pass license exams in the native country.

Message by The Dean Sherstennikova Alexandra Northern State Medical University

Dear Students, The Northern State Medical University has an old tradition in training physicians. It is one of the leaders among high medical schools of Russia. In 2017 the university celebrated its 85th anniversary. Many researches of the university are famous not only in our country but also abroad due to their outstanding contribution to the medical practice and fundamental science. The university has been training international students since 1986. Over 7,000 medical professionals from foreign countries have been trained over this period of time.

Being a teacher means gaining and constantly I am proving professional knowledge and
skills. At our university there are methodical and research schools that guarantee high

Arkhangelsk overview

Arkhangelsk is a city in south of Russia, the capital of the Arkhangelsk region, located in the mouth of the Severnaya (North) Dvina River, about 40 km from the White Sea. Area – 294.4 sq. km.

Arkhangelsk Climate

The climate is temperate, maritime with long moderately cold winters and short, cool summers. It is formed under the influence of the northern seas and the transfer of air masses from the Atlantic Ocean in a small amount of solar radiation. The average temperature in January is -12,8 degrees Celsius, in July – +16,3 degrees C.

Arkhangelsk Economy

Arkhangelsk is a large scientific and industrial center of the north-western part of Russia. Such industries as wood working, timber-chemical, pulp and paper, fish processing, microbiological and machine-building are concentrated in the city.

Timber, paper, carton as well as fish are still the basic trade of Arkhangelsk with other Russian regions and foreign countries. This city is one of the largest transportation hubs in the north-east of Russia. Several railways and highways meet here.

Arkhangelsk is an important center of automobile freight. It is the end of the highway M8, the only road connecting the city with the central part of the country.

Arkhangelsk features

There are two airports in the city (Talagi Airport and Vaskovo Airport). Arkhangelsk is an important seaport, one of the Russian timber and fishing centers.

The coat of arms of Arkhangelsk was approved in 1780. In the golden field of the shield, you can see the flying Archangel, armed with a flaming sword and shield, striking the defeated devil. White nights occur from May 17 to July 26. During this period, in clear weather, natural light allows to carry out all types of work, read newspapers, etc. around the clock.

Arkhangelsk is served by two airports: Arkhangelsk Airport (Talagi) and Vaskovo (local flights). Arkhangelsk Airport (Talagi), located 11 km from the city, has flights to/from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Naryan-Mar. The city is the cultural and historical capital of northern regions, a birthplace of northern culture, traditions and history.

Arkhangelsk sea-river station is depicted on the Russian banknote of 500 Rubles.

Arkhangelsk Museums

The city has a number of interesting

museums.

Arkhangelsk Museum of Local Lore has rich natural science and archaeological collections; old plans, maps, photographs and drawings of the city. You can see the exhibitions about the history of development of the North and Arctic research, folk carving, Kholmogory carved bone, handwritten books.

The museum is located in two buildings: the historical and architectural complex “Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor” – the Northern Dvina Embankment 85/86; the museum building on Lenin Square, 2. Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts has

HOSTELS

The students are provided with accommodation facility in one of the hostels for students in the Northern State Medical University. The hostel rooms are fully furnished with chairs, table, wardrobe, beds and shelf and the rule is to share the room with 2-3 students of the university depending upon the size of the room. There is one shower and toilet for two rooms. Rooms are not shared by the opposite genders. In all the hostels of the university, the buildings have common laundries and kitchens, and there is common room as well in all the hostels of the university. A student will not be provided with the Kitchen equipment and one needs to arrange itself. The internet facility is provided to the students.

The distance between the student dormitory and the university campus is around15-minute walk at the distance of about 1.5 km. Currently NSMU have 5 hostels.

Admission Procedure

Here is the step-by-step detailed information on how to start process for admission in Northern State Medical University. We advice you to read it carefully and pay particular attention to all stages.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS
STEP-1
Visit or call our International Student representative for a free counselling session, when detailed information will be provided regarding the eligibility criteria, course fee structure, admission process, credentials and Facilitation Fees. The student and parents needs to undertake steps as he/she feels necessary to satisfy himself/herself regarding the decision of studying in NSMU and admission process.
STEP-2
0nce the student has satisfied himself / herself about all the merits and demerits of studying in NSMU, The student should submit his/her filled in admission form along with scan copy of 10th & 12th standard certificate and marksheet to our representative.
STEP-3
Within one week university will issue ADMISSION LETTER confirming the reservation of the seat. This letter of admission is then given to student.
STEP-4
Next, INVITATION LETTER which is an official document issued by the Ministry of Foreign affairs of Russian Federation Seeking the Invitation letter is a tedious task and it takes somewhere around one month. (at this stage student should submit his original Passport).
STEP-5
Next, after receiving the INVITATION LETTER and Original Passport,we will apply for student VISA from Russian embassy or consulate. Once the visa is ready, student is informed about the date of travel. The student shall make arrangements to take necessary foreign exchange for the tuition fee to be paid to the University on arrival to Russia and for his/her living expenses.
STEP-6
By this time, the students should start preparing for their travel to Russia. Besides, a check-list of necessary instructions and essential items will also be provided to the travelling students.
STEP-7
The students will also need to ensure that all the necessary documents are collected as such documents will need to be presented at the university office on their arrival.
STEP-8
On their arrival to Moscow, the students will be received by the representative of NSMU at the airport who will guide them from the Airport to the University Hostel. The next day, the representative will help them to pay the college fees and Administrative fees in the university, wherein you will be joining the course of MBBS. The student will not going to have any problem because he/she will be guided till the complete admission process is done.
STEP-9
Our Representative will accompany the young learners at every step on foreign soil.

Scanned copy of passing certificate and mark sheet of class 12th.
Scanned copy of mark sheet of class IOth.
6 Passport size coloured photographs in white background (4.5cm /3.5cm).
